Even when the ministry of health has tried to educate the citizenry about cleanliness & hygiene, the so-called learned & informed people have considered this advice a myth.

In MUK, a recently concluded survey has revealed that 12% of the males in the University don’t bother to wash their hands after using the lavatories.

MUK is considered to be a school of informed people; it’s a pity however, since students don’t consider the issue of hygiene seriously as it should be handled. What’s the use of producing intellectuals such as lawyers, teachers, engineers among others with poor morals & a negative attitude towards environmental cleanliness? Men! What’s happened to you? Why do you say that, “since I didn’t touch urine, I won’t wash my hands”? This’ being irresponsible. Do you consider the place you are in? You are in the lavatory man, incase you’re wondering. I wonder how you’ll teach your children about hygiene. Learn to practice what you preach because this is the only way forward.

Men in almost all places have made themselves so busy to even wash their own hands both in the lavatories & also when going to eat, saying they didn’t touch any thing dirty; which makes the hands automatically clean. Shame on you fathers of the nation.

MUK is the main University in Uganda, but one wonders why none of the students has come out to complain about the hygiene of the place. Is it because students believe that it’s a government property so they have nothing to do with its cleanliness? This’ wrong, the place in which you live regardless of the fact that its owned by your land lord, its cleanliness depends on you & not the land lord since its you dwelling there.

It’s a misconception to believe that hygiene is being smartly dressed, no, no, no; though its part of it, it’s not all of it. You have to take care of where you live, your lecture rooms, places of relaxation, what you eat, your health, condition of the brain among other things, because a dirty lecture room will in one way or another affect your capacity to understand.

Great emphasis has to be put on the halls in which students reside for instance, Lumumba hall. This hall is known as the most violent & pioneer of strikes geared towards the improvement of the general welfare of the University, which is a good ambition. But why should my neighbor try to remove a speck from my eye when he has a log in his? If this is true, then residents of Lumumba the “great hall” should first strike to get their hygiene up graded, so that they can have a clear record while pioneering “larger movements”.

The point here is that, we should put ourselves in order first before looking at other people’s mistakes.

This is a serious indicator of the hygiene of the various students on different campuses, you see glamorous & decent students, but where they come from is a mess.

Dining hall tables are all messed up while students eat, what’s this about? Students believe that hall cleaners should do all the cleaning & maintenance, which’s a fuss. It’s a student’s sole responsibility to ensure that places such as tables & utensils such as trays and folks are clean, at least complain if you can’t directly get involved in the cleaning process.

Choosing to be careless only puts your health at stake. You may even be wondering why you often don’t have appetite, it could be because of your irresponsibility about ensuring cleanliness, & simply handing the role to a person who doesn’t even know or care about your health, for instance, don’t just eat whatever is cooked in halls if its not cooked properly, you pay for it, so why don’t you recognize the value of your money & complain since this is part of your hygiene?

This best works for girls, based on the fact that girls are becoming very lazy. A visit to one hall exposed me to used up utensils unwashed for days. Now what kind of future parents & models are these supposed to become? We need our universities to send out arrows into society & these will promote what they have learnt & also practiced, so as to reflect the quality of education in the respective universities. Together let’s promote hygiene in all schools & universities as we build for the future.
